Those convicted of violating Michigan's super drunk statute, MCL 257.625(1)(c), face severe driver's license sanctions. A first offense requires a suspension of the driver's license for 45 days followed by 320 days of a restricted license. Unlike a traditional OWI charge the super drunk statute requires the installation of an interlock device for the entire period for which the license was restricted (320 days).
An interlock device is a machine that is installed into the offender's motor vehicle. The interlock device requires a breath alcohol content of .025 or less for the vehicle to start. The device also requires additional samples be given while the motor vehicle is in use. The interlock device is based upon electro chemical fuel sensor technology and must be installed in a way that prevents circumvention of the interlock device. Because of the requirements only certified vendors are allowed to install and monitor the interlock devices. The following vendors are certified to install an interlock device:
1. Michigan Interlock: 800-786-7384
2. Smart Start Michigan 888-234-0198
3. #1A Lifesafer of Michigan: 888-294-7002
4. Alcolock MI, Inc. 888-875-4579
5. Nationwide Interlock: 866-694-6099
6. American Interlock: 800-580-0504
